The workshop aims to provide an answer to a question that appears to be a central in the post global financial crisis period: What changes in the current risk management practice are needed to effectively manage risks that could lead to large and catastrophic losses?
It will equip participants with practical knowledge of how to build the robust management framework to protect from unexpected and extreme shocks and how to strike a right balance between the shock absorbency and shock prevention strategies.
Participants will receive a detailed guidance on stress testing for severe risk scenarios including the scenario selection, impact assessment and preparing the stress mitigating actions.
It will also offer a detailed practical guidance on decision making in high uncertainty situation and mitigation of financial risks to ensure that risks are timely and appropriately addressed and their impact once it occurs is successfully mitigated.
At the end of the workshop, participants will know the detailed description of various solutions, methods and processes included in the risk management architecture that help efficiently identify, manage and mitigate the impact of extreme shocks.

Dr Evgueni Ivantsov
Head of Portfolio Management & Strategy, Lloyds Banking Group
Dr Evgueni Ivantsov is a financial practitioner and an internationally recognised specialist in risk management with successful career of more than 20 years in some of the global financial services industry’s top banks. He is an author of a book “Heads or Tails: Financial Disaster, Risk Management and Survival Strategy the World of Extreme Risk”.
Dr Ivantsov is also the Chairman of the European Risk Management Council (since 2011), a think tank of Chief Risk Officers and risk executives from the leading financial institutions operating in Europe. He is also a member of the Advisory Group on Global Risks of the World Economic Forum and a visiting lecturer of Cass Business School, London City University.
Dr Ivantsov spent most of his career in risk and portfolio management. He works at Lloyds Banking Group as the Head of Portfolio Management and Strategy, responsible for improving the risk/return profile of Lloyds’ Retail, Consumer Credit and Wealth portfolios.
Before that, Dr Ivantsov was the Head of Portfolio Risk and Strategy at HSBC where he implemented the strategic enterprise-wide risk management framework and solutions for risk mitigation for major European portfolios. Prior to this role, he led the Basel II model development and implementation at HSBC Group, being the Head of Global Analytics. Before his move to HSBC, he worked in Brussels at ING Group as the Senior Manager of Credit Portfolio Group and the Senior Manager of Large Corporate Rating Agency at BBL (Banque Bruxelles Lambert).
Class exercise: Computer Simulation Game
Workshop participants will gain hands-on risk management experience by going through “virtual” business situations (the computer simulation decision-making game). They will learn how to make strategic risk decisions and understand the consequences of such decisions.
